Durham Parking F.A.Q.

PERMITS

BUSINESS PARKING PERMITS

Business Parking Permits are sold to businesses that require parking in the downtown area for their employees. The procedures are regulated by the Durham Police with approval of the Town Administrator to ensure that prime parking spaces are available to consumers and visitors of the downtown business district.

Where can I buy a business permit?
----
Parking permits for the metered lot on Pettee Brook Lane, Cowell Drive and reserved spots on the east side of Madbury Road between Woodman Road and Garrison Avenue Extension are available for sale at the Durham Police Department. Legitimate business owners or managers are eligible to purchase a maximum of 15 parking permits by appearing in person at the Durham Police Department and presenting a request on company letterhead.
How much does a business permit cost? The cost of the parking permits is pro-rated based upon the following matrix:

How long can I park at these locations with a business permit?
----
Business permits are valid between 6:00 AM and 12:00 Midnight daily.

Can I swap my permit between cars, or do I have to buy a permit for each of my cars?
----
Business permits can be swapped between cars. However, if no permit is displayed, your car can be ticketed.

I have a permit to park in Pettee Brook Lot or Cowell Drive, but I can’t find a place to park. Why?
----
The Town’s strategy is based upon the fact that not all permit holders will park at the same time hence the will issue more permits then there are parking spots. The parking permits are sold inexpensively and give the buyer the “right to hunt” for a spot. Once you’ve got the spot, it’s yours for the day. If there are no available parking in these areas, parking on Madbury Road is generally available.

RESIDENTIAL PARKING PERMITS

I have a residential parking permit but got a ticket anyway. Why?
----
Several neighborhoods have residential parking permits allowing the vehicle to be on the street but even these permits have limitations! No permits supersede the Winter or Overnight Parking Bans when they are in effect between the hours of 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Don’t forget, your Residential Permit MUST be prominently and properly displayed.

Can I “sell” one of my residential visitor permits?
----
It is not the intent of the resident parking system to allow residents to “sell” a permit thereby allowing someone not from the neighborhood to park in this area. There is a finite number of permits issued to each household, one for each vehicle registered to the address plus three guest passes. Once that threshold is met, no additional permits will be issued for free. Permits that are lost or stolen can be replaced for a fee, but the permit that is being replaced will no longer be valid.

HIGH SCHOOL PARKING PERMITS

I am a student at the Oyster River High School. Can I buy a permit?
-----

The Town of Durham authorizes the Oyster River High School administration to issue Parking Permits for Coe Drive as they deem appropriate. Please go to the front office at ORHS to get a permit.
I am a student at the Oyster River High School and left my permit on my parents’ car; what do I do?
You MUST display a permit to park on Coe Drive or in the ORHS parking lots. Go to the ORHS front office and have a temporary permit issued to you.
