Recreation

Introduction from the Parks & Recreation Committee

The following pages give information on over twenty locations in Durham where you can pursue outdoor recreation. One section, Outdoor Recreation Sites, lists and gives a brief description of each site. A following section, Outdoor Recreation, recommends recreational activities well suited to these sites, and finally, a map with a key locates the sites.

We hope you will use and enjoy the many conveniently located recreational sites open to you in Durham.

History

In 1976, the Durham Conservation Commission published "Walking Durham." This pamphlet was "dedicated to the fine art of foot travel." In 1981, they issued another publication describing nineteen sites in Durham where citizens could pursue outdoor recreation. A revision, which added three sites, followed in 1991. All of these excellent publications are out of print, and in any event, they needed updating.

Four members of the Parks and Recreation Committee and two members of the Conservation Commission decided to reissue an updated version of the 1991 publication "Outdoor Recreation" and post it on the Town's web site where it would be readily available and easily revised as need be. Please send any comments or corrections to Sara Wilson, chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee.
