Another weather-maker is approaching New England for part of this weekend. The current forecast has Tropical Storm Danny on a path to clip the US East Coast, bringing with it the potential for heavy rains later this evening into tomorrow.

 

LABOR DAY HOLIDAY

Monday, September 7th is Labor Day.  All Town offices will be closed for the Labor Day holiday. However, there will be NO CHANGE to the refuse and recycling collection that normally occurs on Mondays.  As always, please have all items out by 7:00 AM. 

 

Seacoast Repertory Theatre INTEREST IN MILL POND CENTER

On June 15, 2009, the Seacoast Repertory Theatre came before the Town Council and provided a brief presentation regarding its desire to acquire the former Mill Pond Center property which will allow the organization to expand programming. In today’s Seacoastonline.com, an article appears relative to Repertory Theatre’s progress toward this effort. DURHAM DAY 2009

Durham Day 2009 is getting closer. This year, Durham Day will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2009 from 12:30-4:30 PM at Wagon Hill Farm. Residents interested in assisting with this annual event should contact Durham Day Coordinator, Nicole Moore, at 868-6775 or e-mail durhamday3@yahoo.com.

 

Energy Raiser this Sunday in Durham

On Sunday, August 30, 2009, the Seacoast Area Renewable Energy Initiative (SEAREI) volunteers will be installing a solar hot water system. All in town are invited to stop by and learn about SEAREI, about the system and process from 12-1. Installation will be going on throughout the day from 9:00 AM until the hot water starts flowing -- probably in the mid-afternoon. Learn about the benefits of solar heat, about the costs and benefits of the system and about a local group that can help you make the transition.

 

The party will be at the Gardner's house, 1 Steven's Way (from Mill Road, turn left on Foss Farm, which becomes Stevens Way). Look for the signs. This is the second solar energy raiser in Durham and the third of the fledgling SEAREI organization, so come check it out!

 

HISTORY WALK AROUND DURHAM

On Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 3:00 PM, the Historic District/ Heritage Commission of Durham cordially invites you to an afternoon history walk around Durham sponsored by the Durham Historic District/Heritage Commission, Durham Historical Association, Community Church of Durham UCC, and Three Chimneys Inn. Walk around Durham’s Historic District and listen to brief talks by local experts at all these locations. The district is on the National Register of Historic Places. Meet your community and maybe learn something new about your town. The walk is FREE. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes, bring cameras, layered clothing.

 

The tour starts at 3:00 PM at the Museum in the Old Courthouse building (Main Street & Newmarket Road). The Museum will be open to the public from 2-3:00 PM. The tour includes:

 

1.    Durham Historical Museum (1825) Joseph Coe  

2.    Community Church of Durham (1848) and see the John Hatch paintings of the falls and meeting house

3.    Red Tower (1780), home of Hamilton Smith

4.    Smith Family Chapel (c1900) built by Hamilton Smith family

5.    Oyster River dam (the oldest Ambursen dam in NH) and learn about the history of the dam and hydropower  

6.    Winborn Adams House (1750)

7.    James Paul House (1830) the only stone house in Durham

8.    General Sullivan House (1740) National Register                   

9.    General Sullivan Monument Walk across the historic and scenic Oyster River to the

10.  Three Chimneys Inn (1649) home of Valentine Hill

 

Three Chimneys Inn will host a cookout with live music, FREE for Durham residents. Non residents are welcome to join the cookout for $10.  To make a reservation for the cookout, please contact Three Chimneys at 868-7800 by Wednesday, September 9th.

 

Household Hazardous Waste Day - September 12th

This year’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Day will once again be held at the Department of Public Works facility located at 100 Stone Quarry Drive.  As in the past, all hazardous waste will be collected by appointment only.  To register, you must call the Department of Public Works at 868-5578.  Remember, the maximum collected per resident is five gallons. PARKS & RECREATION – ‘WHAT DO YOU PLAY?’

The Durham Parks & Recreation Department wants to know, What Do You Play?  The P&R Department is making a database regarding what sports, games, activities and events Durham residents are interested in.  This can be anything from hopscotch to horseshoes, knitting to fishing, poker to soccer. Contact P&R Director Michael Mengers at mmengers@ci.durham.nh.us, 868-8064, and let him know what your interests are.  Leave a street address, email address or phone number (whichever you prefer) and you will be contacted when Durham Parks & Recreation is offering a program in your area of interest. 

 

PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT ‘BACK TO SCHOOL BASH’

Just because school is back in session doesn’t mean that the summer fun is over.  On Friday, September 11th from 4:30 to 6:30pm at Woodridge Field join the Parks & Recreation Department for one last summer hurrah.  There will be free ice cream off the ice cream truck, two live performances from local performer Story Telling with Shawn, as well as other games and activities presented by the Durham Public Library and the Parks & Recreation Committee.  If you have any questions about going back to school in style, contact Parks & Recreation Director Michael Mengers at mmengers@ci.durham.nh.us, 868-8064.  For more information, please click HERE.

 

PARKS & RECREATION ‘GET WALKING IN DURHAM’ PROGRAM

The Durham Parks & Recreation Department is proud to announce a partnership with Durham resident, Pamela Faltin.  Pamela is certified by American Fitness Professional & Associates and she is starting all-inclusive fitness classes located in Durham for Durham residents.  Classes include walking programs, interval training, nutrition and hydration, basic weight training, stretching, balance and stability.  All ages and ability levels are welcome. CALLING ALL MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS

The Durham Parks & Recreation Department is going to be fielding a men’s basketball team to play in the Rochester Recreation Department’s winter league. Open gym and scrimmages begin in November.  The actual season runs from the first weekend in January through March.  Games will be played on Sundays and Wednesdays at the Rochester Community Center. 10 men are needed for the team and individual registration will cost approximately $110 for the entire season.  For more information and registration contact Parks & Recreation Director Michael Mengers at mmengers@ci.durham.nh.us, 868-8064.

 

PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT LOOKING FOR ADULTS INTERESTED IN PLAYING FLAG FOOTBALL OR DODGE BALL THIS FALL

The Parks & Recreation Department is organizing a coed flag football and dodge ball team to compete this fall in the New Hampshire Sports & Social Club. The flag football season runs from October through November.  Games will be played on Saturday mornings at The Commons in New Castle.  Individual registration will cost $40 for the season.  The dodge ball season runs from October through December.  Games will be played on Tuesday nights in Portsmouth.  Individual registration will cost $50 for the season.  All ages and skill levels are welcome.  Encourage your friends and neighbors to come out and play!  Please contact Parks & Recreation Director Michael Mengers at mmengers@ci.durham.nh.us, 868-8064, to register or if you have any questions.  Also check out the New Hampshire Sports & Social Club website, www.nhssc.com.

 

PARKS & RECREATION COMMITTEE ‘PICNICS IN THE PARK’ SEASON COMES TO AN END

The Parks & Recreation Committee had their last ‘Picnic in the Park’ on Thursday, August 20th.  The final event was attended by 35 residents who all enjoyed free ice cream courtesy of the Parks & Recreation Committee.  It was a great summer picnic season in Durham.  Thank you to all of those who attended the events throughout the summer and we look forward to seeing you next year!

 

ANNUAL MUNICIPAL LAW LECTURE SERIES

Beginning in September, the 34th Annual Municipal Law Lecture Series, sponsored by the New Hampshire Local Government Center and the Regional Planning Commission, will be holding lectures in communities throughout the state. These lectures are intended for municipal officials with an interest in, or responsibility for, any aspect of municipal land use to include members of planning boards, zoning boards, conservation commissions, and councils/board of selectmen, as well as planners, building inspectors, and code officers. All lectures are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM.

 

The schedule of lectures is as follows:  Lecture 1: Constitutional Issues in Land Use Regulation; Lecture 2: The Five Variance Criteria in the 21st Century; and Lecture 3: What Do You Do When They Stop Building? A registration form has been placed in the mailboxes for Council, Planning Board, Zoning Board, Historic District Commission, and Conservation Commission members. The registration form may also be obtained through the LGC website at: http://www.nhlgc.org/LGCWebSite/PDFDocuments/Flyers/MLLS_flyer.pdf. Board and committee members interested in attending any or all of these lectures are encouraged to do so. Please complete the registration form and return it to Jennie Berry as soon as possible as space is limited. The Town will cover the cost for all registration fees.

DURHAM CHURCHES HOLD ANNUAL 700-FAMILY YARD SALE

On Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the Durham churches of St. George Episcopal Church, Durham Community Church, and St. Thomas More Church will hold the annual 700-family yard sale. Come search for possible treasures in electronics, toys, furniture, house wares, books, and more. Enjoy baked goods and coffee or a delicious BBQ on the lawn. Bring a friend and shop, rain or shine.

 

SPIES IN TIME IN FILM

Presented by resident and UNH Professor Emeritus, Doug “007” Wheeler, Tuesday, September 15, 7:00 PM - "Spies in Time in Film" introduces the themes and contexts of selected great Spy Films at the Durham Public Library. They include the matchless The 39 Steps of John Buchan, John LeCarre's The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and Three Days of the Condor, a film about a CIA operation gone wrong. Film clips will be shown along with discussion of the evolution of secret Intelligence. Q&A will follow.  Join “Wheeler, “Doug Wheeler” for an informative and entertaining evening.

 

FROM HISTORY IN AN OYSTERSHELL – 1600 – 1976

“1938 – Renovation and coordination of the various sewage disposal systems was initiated at the Town Meeting. Construction began in 1947. Three major stages have been accomplished and the 4th is currently in progress. Nearly 40% of the homes are now on the sewer system.”
