Town Offices Closed for Veterans Day

A final reminder that all Town Offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, in observance of Veterans Day. Offices will reopen for regular business hours on Thursday morning, November 12, 2009. All commercial recycling and refuse routes will continue as regularly scheduled.

Downtown design workshop: Other ways to be heard

The show is on the road! Thursday night marked the start of the design workshop (held at UNH's Holloway Commons) that will focus on Durham's downtown and commercial core. The B. Dennis Town Design team depends on residents to help them form a vision for our future.

Some people who wish to participate are out of town. Others may feel unwilling to speak in public. Yet others might only be able to zip in for a few minutes or are physically unable to join the process.

We have a solution. To provide input to the design team, please send your comments to design_charrette@ci.durham.nh.us and we will make sure your comments reach their ears.

HICKORY POND INN IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS USUAL

Jane Brown Sparks would like to thank all of those in the community who have offered their support in this difficult time.  Jane is still living at the Inn and running it on a daily basis--nothing has changed.  She is still doing gatherings of any kind and would be happy to host your event.  She is offering a 'WINTER STIMULUS DEAL"  featuring  rooms for $73 per night, which includes the extended continental breakfast in the morning.  So if you have family or friends coming to town, Jane will be glad to have them as guests in her "Home away from Home."

Safe Routes to School

The Department of Public Works, in collaboration with the Oyster River Middle School, has been busy preparing a Safe Routes To School Grant which has a deadline of Monday, November 9th.  If the grant is awarded, over $100,000 could come to Durham to improve sidewalks, pathways, and signage around the Oyster River Middle School as well as provide funding for biking and walking educational workshops and additional crossing guards during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

FALL CLEANUP

Fall Cleanup will begin on Monday, November 9, 2009.  All items must be out by 7:00 AM that day and fit the criteria to guarantee their pickup.  Please follow the below guidelines to guarantee a successful fall cleanup:

§         Leaves should be placed in paper leaf bags (remember, plastic bags are not recyclable).  Paper bags may be purchased at Durham Marketplace, Home Depot or Lowes.  Loose leaves will not be accepted but may be brought to the Transfer Station & Recycling Center on Durham Point Road with a permit at no additional charge on Tuesdays and Saturdays between 7:30am and 3:15pm.

§         Brush should be placed in one direction, bundled, and tied with string (no wire please).

§         Brush and limbs must be no greater than 5 feet in length and 5 inches in diameter.

§         The amount of brush and limbs is limited to one truckload per household.

§         Cutting off small limbs from branches will help maximize each load.

§         Remember, backyard composting your leaves and brush reduces the flow of waste while at the same time producing valuable organic matter for the soil.  It improves your soil and the plants growing in it.

FOUND – MISSING GLOVE

If you visited the Department of Public Works last week and lost a Brown Leather glove with fur trim, please stop in to the DPW office to claim the glove.

Depot Road Culvert Repair

The work on the storm water culvert under the Depot Road parking lot began recently.  The Department of Public Works received a second Brownfields grant last year totaling $200,000 to repair the 8-foot storm water culvert that carries storm water from A lot beneath Depot Road to Pettee Brook.

PUBLIC INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS – BEARDS CREEK IMPOUNDMENT & DRAWDOWN OF THE MILL POND

On Monday, November 9, 2009 beginning at 6:30 PM, a public informational meeting regarding the drawdown of the Beards Creek impoundment will be held at the Durham Police Station on Route 108 (Dover Road) in the conference room.  Immediately following the Beards Creek session, another public informational meeting will be held in the same conference room beginning at approximately 7:00 PM regarding the drawdown of the Mill Pond on the Oyster River. The Department of Public Works plans to temporarily drain the impoundments starting on or around November 12, 2009 in order to inspect, collect samples, and perform maintenance on infrastructure that are inaccessible when the impoundments are full.  The water will be released slowly over a 3 to 4 day period with the refilling starting on or before November 27, 2009.  Anyone interested in learning about these drawdown events is encouraged to attend the November 9th meetings. Questions and comments should be directed to Town Engineer David Cedarholm at (603) 868-5578.

Did you Know…?

Compared to teens who have frequent family dinners (five or more per week), those who have infrequent family dinners (fewer than three per week) are more than one and a half times likelier to use alcohol? FROM HISTORY IN AN OYSTERSHELL – 1600 – 1976

“1960 – Each fall mayoralty campaigns were a campus tradition. Two weeks prior to Home Coming ambitious candidates vied with each other with fantastic promises and public exhibitions. The only official duty was to host the half-time of the game with high jinks and hilarity.”

Have a nice weekend.
