Subject: Public Hearing on changes to the barn on Rt. 108

Dear Michael and Members of the Historic District Commission and Heritage 
Commission,

I am writing in response to the barn diagram that notes changes to the barn on Rt. 108 
associated with the Riverwoods project.

The proposed changes adding doors and window areas to the two ends of the barn are not 
congruent with the architecture of this simple, old barn. And the barn is located on a 
gateway into Durham. Gateways have special meaning to the residents of Durham and 
they are noted in our Master Plan.

These changes in the barn would cause quite a contrast with the adjacent older 
farmhouse. The contrast would cause a helter-skelter, disorderly, haphazard gateway 
experience.

The HDCHC has made some crucial and very appropriate suggestions for architectural 
changes in past proposed developments which all of Durham has benefited from. I urge 
you to continue your fine work by working with Riverwoods to come up with a better 
design for the barn. Thank you.
