Date: July 6, 2017 at 2:21:47 PM EDT To: Peter Stanhope , Andrea Bodo , Andrea Bodo Dear Peter, Andrea, and members of the Heritage Commission, As I am out of state I hope you will share my comments on the latest exterior barn designs at 56 Dover Rd. The old farm and barn are an important part of the gateway into historic Durham. Preserving these buildings while adaptively reusing the property as a marketing center I hope Is the goal of the Heritage Commission. When looking at the photographs of the existing north and south barn elevations it's important that the original barn door and window dimensions be preserved with the insertion of period appropriate 6/6 window sash and complimentary sash and doors filing the barn door openings. It would also be appropriate to add a double transom light over the barn door opening which was often added to let in more light. The latest designs for the north and south elevations are too high and out of proportion to the original window and door openings. As to the east elevation -- the most public view --I find the linkage between the 1st and 2nd story windows with grill work to be out of place for a barn structure, because it creates an objectionable, atypical, vertical striped effect. This verticality flys in the face of the horizontality of most barn sash lighting cow stalls on the long sides. While I understand your role is advisory I hope you can preserve key features of our farm heritage, particularly at Durham's gateways that townspeople treasure. Thank you for sharing my comments with the public at your hearing this evening. Sincerely, Nancy Sandberg
