Michael Behrendt Director of Planning and Community Development (“Town Planner”) Town of Durham 8 Newmarket Road Durham, NH 03824 (603) 868-8064 www.ci.durham.nh.us From: Cathy Leach [] Sent: Sunday, August 23, 2015 10:55 PM To: Michael Behrendt Subject: Input for Pauly's sign plan To Michael and Members of the Planning Board: I would like to offer my support for the sign designs and specifications as presented on 8/12 for the “Pauly’s Pockets Building” on Main St. I was at the last PB meeting, so was able to see the actual sign sample. Specific to information and suggestions provided in the Planner’s notes, I would like to add the following: * I thought the ‘caps’ and the borders on the signs looked nice and added an interesting architectural element. I believe discretion in using both elements should remain with the developer/owner and sign design professional * Given the proximity of the signs on the building, I would encourage the board to think more about allowing for consistency in the signs. I don’t believe that individual ‘projection’ signs on this building would: o Look any nicer than what was proposed o Provide clear, easy, and a quick understanding of the storefront inhabitants, especially as driving from Mill Rd. or the campus The downtown area across the street is a mish-mash of signage already, and my opinion is that the Pauly’s building sign design actually brings some much-needed ‘clean lines’ and a contemporary feel to Main St. There is nothing wrong with the signs that were presented and I assume they follow all zoning requirements. The comments of 1-2 board members at the last meeting represented their own personal views, not concerns related to zoning or planning. That is a dangerous precedent to set, and the owner should be allowed to use the signs as designed by a sign professional. Thank you. Cathy Leach
