I am among those in the neighborhood who are positively inclined regarding this idea, assuming that noise leakage and late-night “crowd control” issues are addressed carefully. The plan adds some “diversity” to Town activities and addresses the needs of the growing number of Chinese students at UNH. I’ve been impressed with the ways in which Mei Wei operates, and I hope to see it continue to succeed. Also, it’s always nice to see an empty storefront filled (even if it’s a bit surprising given the possible building demolition). All that said, however, I think the change in use is significant enough for this proposal to undergo a formal site review and to schedule a Public Hearing. After all, those who live within easy earshot of Mei Wei (particularly those at the Brookside Commons and on the Plaza side of Faculty Road) should have a chance to express possible concerns about late-night noise traveling across the asphalt (especially when the leaves are off in winter) and to see how Mei Wei responds to and addresses those concerns. With or without a Public Hearing, I’d also like to see that some simulated sound-leakage tests are completed (how audible the music would be in the surrounding area with doors closed, with doors opening for patrons entering and exiting, etc.). And I believe that there should be some remedial procedures in place in case the sound outcome is not as predicted or planned. I hope that all that needs to be done to make this idea work will indeed be done! Best, Joshua Meyrowitz 7 Chesley Drive
