My purpose, as I’ve stated before and would appreciate your forwarding to the P.B., is to strongly support the amendment to give more thought to the impact of what would increase the density of the downtown core. I was able to catch the latter part of last night’s meeting, so I may be repeating what others have already said about the impact that would ensue from adding so much greater housing downtown. It’s quite obvious how much greater stress this would place on town services, infrastructure, businesses catering to students with so many other needs for townspeople not being met. I also link what could occur with our need for the police building renovation and was also sorry I couldn’t attend the T.C. meeting Monday, where I would have spoken in strong favor for the incredible need for the renovation/expansion of the police building as needs increase and their inadequate workplace makes doing their really wonderful job for Durham so much less efficient. It would be so short-sighted to veto this much needed expansion. I also want to point out that although it appears the meetings tend to attract more of a certain element than others, I can honestly tell you, I’m definitely not speaking just for myself, but hear from many people, like myself, who have lived here a long time. For some one to say, as I heard Monday, if you don’t like living with students, live somewhere else. Pretty callous thinking. Living as I do near town, I spend time cleaning up beer cans and garbage from my property and I don’t think mixed housing is an attractive option. Sorry for the length, but I was impressed with what a good, thoughtful meeting this was and I’m grateful that there will be time to reflect on the impact of more student housing.
