Bakers Corner
The gentleman who greeted me from behind the counter introduced himself as Troy, one of the owners of this delightful new family run bakery and ice cream shop. A family business indeed as I learned that his wife, Cam, and five children will all be helping out at Baker’s Corner. The children, ranging in age from 12 to 24 will be scooping ice cream, running the register and, I’ll bet, a whole lot of behind the scenes work to keep the bakery running smoothly. Cam, the owner of Fantastic Fortunes, which makes giant gourmet fortune cookies found in local stores and online, will be using her baking expertise to bring in a variety of freshly made goodies.
A retired law enforcement officer, Troy had always had a desire to work in the culinary field and spent several years working for the UNH dining services as well as running the food service program at Elliot Hospital in Manchester. The couple, who live in Lee, had been looking to set up shop in Durham for quite a while believing it was the right place for what they wanted to do. They are happy to be opening while the UNH campus is on summer break which they say gives them a chance to better connect with the residents.
Understanding the need to keep kids busy, the Baker’s Corner offers board games in their welcoming seating area to encourage guests of all ages to linger and enjoy their time in downtown Durham. A place for community and great pastries awaits you at 1 Madbury Road. Open every day from 8am – 8pm. Learn more by visiting their Facebook page.
