Emery Farm
Listed as the oldest family farm in the U.S., Emery Farm has been in existence since 1660. The farm stand, while not as old as the farm itself, has been around since the 1970’s offering seasonal fruits, vegetables and other assorted treats. As the popularity of the farm stand grew, ideas for new offerings grew along with it. Eventually, the original farm stand just wasn’t going to meet the needs of the current owner, Holly Philbrick. This is Holly’s fourth season at the farm, and her vision for the Emery Farm Market & Café has finally come to fruition.
Wood from the old farm stand was reclaimed and used in parts of the new facility. The red siding as you enter the building along with the newly built counters came from the old farm stand. Sourcing locally, included the interior furnishings, which were crafted by a local Durham business, Dennen Design.
In previous years, the farm stand closed on December 24th and didn’t reopen until April or May. Now, folks can shop for locally made products year-round and choose from a more robust selection. The new building, approximately three times the size of the old farm stand, enables the staff to offer more lunch options including soups, sandwiches and salads. Commuters can stop by on their way to work for locally sourced coffee, tea and a breakfast sandwich or muffin. Wagon Hill Farm, a popular spot for sledding, is located just across the street. Families, looking to warm up after taking on the Hill, can swing by the Café for a cup of hot chocolate and cider donuts. The new facility also has a large open space on the second floor that can be used for community events or meeting space.
The team, which has grown to three full-time and 10 part-time staff, is thrilled with the new digs and are looking forward to serving the community year-round. The Emery Farm Market & Café will be joining the downtown businesses for the holiday Shop L8 nights, beginning this Thursday, December 12th. The Market will stay open until 8pm on the 12th and 19th offering free wine tasting for shoppers over the age 21. Gift items are varied, plentiful and include everything from goat’s milk soap to pottery items.
The Emery Farm Market & Café, located at 157 Piscataqua Road, is open seven days a week. For more information you can visit their website, www.emeryfarm.com, or call: 603-742-8495.
