Sweetened Memories
Most businesses start out with a written business plan and a good bit of industry expertise. Even then, success is not a guarantee. Sweetened Memories, which recently expanded into a beautifully renovated space on Jenkins Court, managed to find success with little professional training, and no written plan. However, the owners Kathy and Alaina did have a lot of natural talent, the motivation to learn, and a determination to create amazing cakes.
The duo met around 6 years ago, and until a few weeks ago, worked out of Kathy’s kitchen. They both bake but, Alaina spends a good deal of her time on the business side of things while Kathy runs the kitchen. As they grew, additional staff were added to keep up with the demand. When they opened their new commercial space, the team had grown to 16 people. Their reputation, and their savvy social media marketing skills bring customers from all over New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Sweetened Memories also has a special ordering system for UNH parents, enabling them to have cakes delivered right to their students.
Birthdays are big business, and cake designs follow the trends. Currently, unicorns and Fort Night are very popular requests. Baby showers and anniversaries are the next most requested cakes and, of course, wedding season brings in plenty of brides. The expansion also enabled the team to offer a dessert counter where customers can pop in and purchase cupcakes and cookies.
Like most expansions, the facility had its challenges and took a few months longer than anticipated. Additional plumbing had to be brought in and venting had to be installed before any equipment could be set up. The efforts paid off as the new venue is bright, cheerful and the scents are amazing! Customers can see right into the kitchen where custom cakes, cupcakes, and cookies are being created.
Stop in for a visit Monday through Saturday, 13 Jenkins Court, Suite 120, downtown Durham. Check out their menu and designs online: www.sweetenedmemories.com or on Facebook.
