FROM “DURHAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE A
HISTORY –
1900-1985â€
Business (1900-1930): "Open farmland on
the south side of Main Street was still under
cultivation in the early 1900s. Arthur
McDaniel's home (later to become Alpha Tau
Omega) overlooked his cornfield that
stretched from Kappa Sigma to Mill Road, and
back to College Brook, until Hetzel Hall and
Fairchild Hall were built there. On the east
side of Mill Road, John Smart's home and
garden and Ed Chesley's farm looked down to
the brook over rolling fields."
