Durham Public
Library Volunteer Appreciation Party

DPL

On Thursday June 18th, the Durham
Public Library hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Party to thank all the wonderful
people who take the time week in and week out to assist. Some of these dedicated
individuals have been working with the library since its inception in 1997. The
Friends of the Library, Trustees, and volunteers help in hundreds of ways, from
baking cookies, to processing and shelving books, to finding a suitable location
for a new home.

Child
Passenger Safety

Vehicle crashes remain the number
one killer of children ages 2-14 in the United States. “Safe Kids Buckle Up”
teaches parents and caregivers how to buckle up children the correct way, on
every ride. The four basic steps are available at www.safekids.org
.

The Durham Fire Department offers
complimentary child safety seat inspections. Please call 868-5531 to schedule an
appointment or to pose a question.

The Durham Fire Department has
partnered with Oyster River Parents and Preschoolers (ORPP) to reuse child
safety seats. Child safety seats may be reused provided the seat was not
involved in a crash and the seat history is known. Please contact Brendan J.
O’Sullivan bosullivan@ci.durham.nh.us
or Jenna
Roberts ORPP.Director@yahoo.com  if you
would like to donate a slightly used child safety
seat.

Library Closed for Independence Day
Holiday:

The Library
Trustees have approved closing the Library on Friday, July 3 and Saturday July
4. The library will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, July
7th. Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday.

New Catalog
Computer:
  The Durham Public Library has
added another
catalog station in the library to look up books and other materials. It is
located at the far side of the reading area in the corner by the front window.
This wireless station was installed to relieve some of the congestion at the
front desk, but it is also configured to allow patrons to download audiobooks to
their MP3 players. Audiobooks can be downloaded for free and are available in
the library or from any internet connected computer through the library’s
website using individual library card numbers. The new catalog
station is not to be used for internet searching or email. Patrons are asked to
use one of the public computer stations for these
purposes.

THURSDAY NIGHT PARK PICNIC HOSTED BY
DURHAM PARKS
& RECREATION COMMITTEE

Please join us at a “Thursday Night
Park Picnic” for townspeople throughout the summer.  Every other Thursday,
a location has been selected where people can bring a picnic and any games,
etc., they would like to play or share.  The next picnic location will be
along the waterfront at Old Town Landing on July 9.  Bring your canoe or
kayak and enjoy the waterfront from a new viewpoint!  It should be close to
high tide, allowing access by the boat dock.  Games will also be set up in
advance, but feel free to bring your favorites along as well.  It is
intended to be a very casual event, with no specified times or requirements
beyond getting together after 5:00 PM and meeting more of the members of our
great community.  You are encouraged to come individually or in groups and
join in the fun. Please contact the Parks & Recreation Committee at durhamparksandrec@yahoo.com with
any questions or suggestions for other locations you would like to see utilized
for these gatherings. Given the venue, consider the event canceled if it is
raining.  Hope to see you there!

FROM
HISTORY IN AN OYSTERSHELL – 1600 – 1976

“1919 – Louis Bourgoin was a one-man
police force for Durham and college for 37 years. He was the
butt of endless pranks by students and others, most of which will never be
recorded. The Chief could always be counted on to help the
down-and-out.”

Have a fun and safe July Fourth
weekend!
