"c18">Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo
(Spanish for the "fifth of May").
It is a celebration held on May 5. In
Mexico, the date is observed to commemorate
the Mexican army's unlikely victory over
French forces at the Battle of Puebla on
May 5, 1862.  Contrary to widespread
popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's
Independence Day—which is actually
celebrated on September 16.

CEREMONY

"c18">On Thursday of this week,
approximately 20 residents along with town,
state, and Federal officials attended the
ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly
constructed fish ladder at the Wiswall dam.

"c23"> "c18">OUT WITH THE OLD...IN WITH THE
NEW!

"c18">The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
has been the law enforcement vehicle of
preference and is the most widely used
automobile in police departments throughout
the United States and Canada. Many police are
mourning the fact that in April 2011, Ford
stopped making this vehicle and has instead
begun offering a version of the Ford
Taurus.

"c18">Knowing this reality was looming as
part of the 2011 operating budget, Chief Kurz
postponed ordering two of the Crown
Victoria’s, which historically is the
routine as the department replaces two of
their six patrol vehicles each year, opting
to focus instead upon the more energy
efficient vehicles coming out in 2013 and
ordering a total of four that year.  Due
to budget realities, one of the four
replacement vehicles was
eliminated.

"c18">The first of three Taurus police
vehicles has arrived and is shown heading to
the paint shop to receive its
“Durham” markings.  While
built on a Taurus base, the new Ford Police
Interceptors are equipped with highly energy
efficient V-6 engines that will enhance
gasoline usage by 20% over the V-8 Crown
Victoria’s.  In addition the
all-wheel drive vehicles will help Durham
police respond to the community’s needs
in any kind of weather.

"c20">Town departments are looking for
ways to accomplish objectives while at the
same time reducing our collective carbon
footprint.

of Horticulture Technology John Hart and his

overgrown lilacs at Oyster River Park. They
were joined by some townspeople for the

several years of attention to get them back
in size and in flowering well. In the
meantime, the bushes will look a bit thin
when you drive by. Durham DPW will dispose of
the branches. Next spring John and his TSAS
class will return and observe the difference
between the pruned and unpruned lilacs, and
finish the rest.  Appreciation is
extended to Professor Hart's class for the
goood work accomplished in support of the

TROOP 154 BRAVES VIRGINIA
WEATHER!

"c18">Durham's Boy Scout Troop
154 braved wintery Virginia weather on
the Appalachian Trail last week.  An
April vacation trip to Shenandoah National
Park has been a recurrent event to give an
opportunity for the Troop to get back out on
a trail, hiking and backpacking, without
having to wait for the weather to cooperate
in our beloved White Mountains. Not the
case for 2012!  Day 1 on the trail had
to be postponed due to 20 mph sustained winds
with 30-40 mph gusts and what ended up being
an 8-10” snowfall!  Not to be
deterred, the time was well spent discovering
history while hiking and exploring at
Gettysburg.  Once Skyline Drive was
re-opened at about 11am, the troop was able
to get on the trail for Day 2 and was able to
complete about 50 miles for the week –
all the while communing with nature, bonding
within the troop, honing outdoor skills,
gaining a new appreciation for running water
and meeting new and interesting people
– both thru-hikers and section-hikers
alike.

1900-1985"

Communications-Durham's
Post office:
“In 1913 parcel post
service became available in Durham, and
students were able to send their laundry
cases home for as little as 15 cents. A
democrat wagon (one horse and single,
moveable seat) filled with laundry cases
heading for the depot was a common sight on
Main Street. The returning cases usually held
a homemade goody as well as clean clothes.
Insured delivery of packages was also
introduced at about this time, as was the
opportunity to order by mail from a
catalogue. This became an exciting adventure,
and Sears, Roebuck and Montgomery Ward were
soon household
names.”
