RESCINDING STAGE 1 WATER CONSERVATION

Area rivers are approaching their normal levels. As a result, it is no longer necessary to implement water conservation efforts beyond the normal stage. New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services will also be releasing water from Lake Pawtuckaway which will boost flows in the Lamprey River through the rest of the fall. We wish to thank Durham residents for their voluntary assistance with helping to provide adequate water supplies during the past water conservation efforts.

BICYCLE ROAD RACES IN DURHAM

Durham is a community that encourages bicycling along its entire roadway system especially many of our rural more scenic areas.  Wherever there is a designed/sanctioned road race, the organization must complete a Special Events form which is then reviewed and signed by each applicable Department Head such as police, the fire department, or public works, etc.  Each department reviews the event from their perspective gleaning issues that must be addressed by the applicant prior to permission being granted.  On several occasions there have been concerns expressed about large amounts of bicyclists traversing along various roadways in Durham.  While the police are aware that there are no special event permits, it appears that various bicycle clubs meet in Durham for breakfast and then head out for a ride through the area.  This activity does not require a permit and is perfectly legal as long as the bicyclist obeys the rules of the roadway.  Of course, vehicle operators have laws that they must adhere to also.  If there is an issue that concerns you, please contact Chief Kurz via dkurz@ci.durham.nh.us or 868-2324.

“DRUG TAKE BACK’ PROGRAM AT THE DURHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT

The initiative of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been a national success where the previous events occurring in New Hampshire have taken in an astounding 276 tons of unwanted or expired medications in years past.  So resounding was the success to fill this void that last year Chief Kurz decided to provide the program on a continuous basis to the residents of Durham.  Numerous residents participated by dropping off a significant amount of unwanted or expired prescriptions at the police facility.  Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM, residents can drop off their unused, unwanted, or expired medications at the Durham Police facility on Dover Road for no cost and it’s all anonymous!

Doing so prevents prescription drug abuse as six out of ten teenagers who have taken prescription narcotics state that they get them from their parents or relative’s medicine cabinets.  Additionally, using this service keeps trace drugs out of our lakes, streams and estuaries as wastewater treatment plants cannot remove many of the compounds found in medications; so when flushed or put in a landfill, drugs are discharged into our surface and ground water and consumed by fish and wildlife.  If anyone has any questions about this service, please call the Durham Police during business hours Monday through Friday.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISORS OF THE CHECKLIST

If voters are uncertain of their current party affiliation, click HERE for more information.

If a voter discovers they are not listed the way they would like to be, they can change their party affiliation at the Town Clerk’s office during regular office hours, 8AM - 5PM, Monday-Friday any time up to 90 days before a primary. The Presidential Primary is scheduled for February 9, so this deadline will be in early November.

Undeclared (Independent) voters choose whether to take a Republican or a Democratic ballot at a primary and sometimes forget to change back to Undeclared.  They then find themselves having to vote in the party they did not care about.  Please do not be one of those unhappy voters.

BUDGET PROCESS UPDATE

This week business manager Gail Jablonski and  Administrator Selig continued the process of meeting with each department in town to evaluate budget requests that have been received.  It is a time-consuming and arduous process working through every line item within each departments budget.  Through the process, many reductions are made, some lines are increased, and additional detail is inserted into the document to better explain and clarify requests.  Departments are challenged on why they believe they need certain requests that are included in their proposals. If residents have put in calls to the administrator's office or the business department and receive a delayed response, it is because the majority of time is being spent on budget review, in addition to managing the day-to-day affairs of the town.

Above, IT manager Luke Vincent describes for Gail Jablonski, Council chair Jay Gooze and Mr. Selig, why a server change is needed.

DURHAM EXPERIENCING TELEPHONE SCAMS

Police Chief David Kurz advises that the police department has had several residents contact them about a continuing scam.  It is clear that the desire to separate people from their money has no bounds as scammers become very innovative in attempting to do so!  The calls have been very similar in nature with a foreign sounding voice contacting the persons at work and advising them of an outstanding warrant for their arrest.  The residents are advised that they can contact a telephone number, one was in Florida and the other was in Texas to find out how much the “fine” is!

What is adding a thread of fear to these calls is that in both incidents the residents were contacted at work!  While the Durham Police are not absolutely positive how the victim’s work information is being obtained, there is a hypothesis that some Facebook and/or LinkedIn sites have such information and may be used in this manner.

The Durham Police Department is sharing this information for awareness purposes and to help prevent fraud and/or identity theft from occurring during these purposely stressful telephone calls!  As always the Durham Police urge residents NEVER to provide personal and/or credit card information via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or telephone solicitation. It is requested that any suspicious solicitation activity be reported to the Durham Police for further assessment and review.

DURHAM WELCOMES NEW DURHAM-BASED SOFTWARE START-UP COMPANY, SALESGOOSE, LLC

SalesGoose is a buyer-controlled sales engagement platform that empowers buyers to make better informed decisions as to with which sellers they should invest their most valuable asset – their time.

The company, founded by Durham resident Rick Ouellette, has received confirmation that it is one of five New Hampshire-based start-ups that has earned its way into the final round of New Hampshire's largest competition.  TechOut 2015 is jointly organized by the New Hampshire High Tech Council and AlphaLoft. The competition identifies entrepreneurs with viable plans to develop and market new technology products and funds them through investment capital awards.

The contest’s winner will be selected at a live event hosted by Dyn in Manchester, NH on Wednesday, October 7th beginning at 5:30 p.m. At that event, a panel of judges will select the first and second place winners, while the third place winner will be decided entirely by the audience the night of the event.
