Opt-Up for Climate Impact !

Opting Up to Greener Power Can Maximum Your Climate Impact !

Once you are part of Durham Community Power, you can Opt Up to a higher renewable rate class and do something really significant about global warming. The CO2 emitted by the burning of fossil fuels to make your electricity has a huge environmental impact.

Durham Community Power will automatically place you into the Granite Plus rate with 33% renewable energy. You can easily “Opt Up” to a greener rate option with more electricity generated by solar, wind and hydro and reduce or even eliminate those emissions.

What environmental impact will Opting Up Have?  Huge!  Perhaps a specific example will help:

  • An average household* opting for Clean 100% renewables will save 3.1 tons of CO2 a year compared to the Eversource default, and have nearly the same impact as installing solar panels at a fraction of the cost!
  • A household choosing Clean 50 will save 1.2 tons of CO2 a year.

How much more will it cost me to Opt Up?  Surprisingly little!

  • Clean 50 will cost less than $5 additional a month, about $60 a year more than Granite Plus. Compared to the current Eversource price projected over a year, Clean 50 will still save $38  for a household with the average usage of 8400 kWh a year.
  • The same average household opting for Clean 100 will pay only 2.7¢ per kWh, $227 per year more than for Granite Plus, while saving over 3 tons of CO2 !

From now through January 2025 both the Granite Plus and Clean 50 plans save money compared to the current Eversource rate.  Consider what you can afford, and encourage your friends to Opt Up too!  You can always opt back down at any time for no charge.

Take action to Opt Up

If you do nothing you will automatically remain in Granite Plus plan for Durham. To Opt up, remember to go to the website CommunityPowerNH.gov/Durham or call

1-603-866-POWR and choose Clean 50 or Clean 100.

How much will it actually cost me?  and how much CO2 will I save?

To calculate what you will pay (and save) in a year you would first estimate your average monthly usage from your electric bill, say about 700 kWh per month on an “average” bill in NH. Multiply it times 12 to get your annual kWh use.  Or call Eversource at 800-662-7764 for a precise amount.

Multiply your annual usage times each rate option (changed from cents into dollars) to get your dollars per year, and times the savings for each option (changed to dollars) to get your savings per year. Note that the rates will change every 6 months, and you can revise your plan selection up or down at any time.

The generation of NH electricity with the legally required minimum of 23.4% renewable electricity (Granite Basic) produces 0.896 pounds of CO2 per kWh, but Clean 100 only generates 0.156 pounds per kWh. To calculate the tons of CO2 you save each year by moving to Clean 100, multiply (your annual kWh usage) x (0.896 - 0.156) / 2000. Congratulations !
